Limited to 500 pieces worldwide, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe watch is engraved with a tapestry of motifs inspired by Maori tattoos and is sported on the wrist of famous freerunner, Simon Nogueira
When the Aikon was relaunched a few years ago with a bolder, sportier aesthetic, it marked a turning point for Maurice Lacroix who was journeying down a more urban road. The sports watch was automatic, accessible and stylish. With its integrated bracelet, it pitched itself as the ideal companion for those with active lifestyles. Extending on this special collection of sporty wristwatches is the new limited edition Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe watch of just 500 pieces worldwide, which celebrates a very special partnership.
Simon Nogueira is a man who embraces urban landscapes, balancing on the edge of danger as he takes on immense challenges whilst showing the world his talents that have made him a popular freerunner on social media. The 27-year old Parisian is known for hanging off tall buildings and climbing the exteriors of city buildings. It’s a passion that requires innate skill and above all – precision. The relationship between the values held at Maurice Lacroix and Simon’s daring stunts go hand-in-hand, thus there was no partnership better suited than between the two experts.
The TikTok sensation wears a Maurice Lacroix watch of his very own – the Aikon Urban Tribe. He was presented the timepiece by Maurice Lacroix as part of his role as an ML crew member. It’s no surprise why this particular luxury sports watch appeals to Simon Nogueira so much. The case and bracelet of the timepiece have been beautifully engraved – a topography of motifs inspired by architecture and urban landscapes, as well as Maori tattoos.
When stood at the very top of a building, balancing over a ledge and absorbing a tapestry of roads, bustling city-goers, buildings of various heights and moving vehicles - Simon becomes incredibly aware of his senses all of a sudden. Noise, smell and touch all become heightened under an impounding rush of adrenaline. The ticking seconds of the day echo between his ears and it is at this moment that the freerunner becomes at one with the passage of time and just how paramount precision is. Accompanying him in his pursuits is the Aikon Urban Tribe watch, which sits close to the skin with a comfortable stainless steel bracelet. The 42mm model is both tough and ergonomic in design. The patterns, lines and grooves engraved into the surface of the watch’s case and bracelet are reminiscent of Maori tattoos. These deep-set shapes create pockets of light as the wrist moves, engaging with natural or artificial light to deliver tactility and dimension.
A black sunray-brushed Clous de Paris dial acts as a backdrop to a simple three-handed date display. The hour and minute hands have been treated with Super-LumiNova material to assist with timekeeping in the dark. The hands slightly taper towards the end, accompanying a central sweep seconds hand. The date aperture at 3 o’clock is remarkably easy to read thanks to a bright white background that becomes the first detail revealed from underneath a sleeve if worn by a left-handed wearer. The stick indexes around the hour track are beautifully shaped, with double stick arrangements residing at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The third location shares its length with the date window. Lastly, the Maurice Lacroix lettering can be seen taking prime location underneath the 12 o’clock marker. The entire dial is also protected from dust, denting, light, moisture and heat damage thanks to a strong lens of scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass.
The new Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe watch is 200-meter water-resistant and affords a clear view of the performance of the self-winding movement and its meticulously decorated finishes. To uphold this water-resistant capability, the watch features a screw-down case. A stainless steel bracelet continues the unique engraved decoration around the wrist, securing with a folding clasp. The watch is also integrated with an easy-change system that enables you to alternate the metal bracelet with a rubber band option without the need for any additional tools.
The Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe watch is powered by the ML 115 automatic calibre. This self-winding heart is based on the architecture of the Sellita SW 200-1 – a tried and tested movement that provides basic hours, minutes, seconds and a date function. The movement propels at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a power reserve of 38 hours. For the purpose of exposing the performance and arrangement of the movement through a see-through caseback, the rotor is engraved with a unique pattern that matches the decoration on the case and bracelet of the watch.
