Introducing the Junghans 1972 Competition White Gold Limited Edition
Monday - 21 November 2022
Junghans, the luxury watchmaker, renowned for its extensive range of elegant, minimalist Bauhaus-style dress watches, is also proud of its sporting legacy. To commemorate this heritage, it releases the new 1972 Competition 18ct white gold limited edition watch, exclusive to just 50 pieces worldwide.
Sport is important to the Black Forest-based watchmaking company, Junghans. In 2019 and 2021 it became the official timekeeper for FIS Nordic Ski World Championships and is promoted by brand ambassador, Karl Geiger – the “Skiing Athlete of the Year” as defined by the German Ski Association. These are just recent events. In the past, Junghans built a reputation for itself within the sporting industry, having developed timekeeping instruments for competitors taking part in archery, rowing and the 100m. In addition to this, Junghans became the official timekeeper to the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich and developed a very important model, alongside other devices like an electric start control – a multi-counter device for tracking boats. To mark 50 years since this important model, Junghans releases the new 1972 Competition watch in 18ct white gold. It borrows features from the distinctive bullhead style – a name taken from the push-pieces located at the top of the case and the crown positioned in between the two. The model is limited to just 50 pieces worldwide to mark the time gone by since this memorable timepiece. The 1972 Competition limited edition watch has been released alongside a stainless steel model, exclusive to just 1,972 pieces to reference the year of the popular watch’s release.
The new Junghans 1972 Competition Limited Edition White Gold watch
Several features bring this new limited edition Competition 1972 watch into the present. For instance, the watch retains a 100-meter water-resistant case and features a strong pane of sapphire crystal glass across its front, treated with plenty of anti-reflective material to assist with a clear view into the dial. In addition to this, the case features a screw-down crown flanked by two push-pieces at the top of the case, as well as a screw-down caseback to protect the internally-fitted movement and prevent it from harm. The position of the crown at 12 o’clock, together with the elliptical shape of the case harkens back to stopwatches of a bygone era, designed in this way to sit effortlessly in the hand, with easy access to the push-pieces using the thumb. The watch could also be held in the hand at an angle that makes viewing the time super easy.
The 18ct white gold case of the new Junghans 1972 Competition Limited Edition watch measures a 45.5mm diameter and a height of 14.5mm. It protects the structure of the self-winding Calibre J880.1. This movement is based on the design of the SW500 Sellita movement. It offers a 12-hour counter unlike its stainless steel sibling, powered by the Calibre J880.5, which foregoes this. The automatic movement also produces a power reserve of 48 hours and offers hours, minutes, central chronograph seconds, date, 12-hour counter and 30-minute counter. Finished with rhodium coating, the movement features stripe decoration upon its rotor, blued screws, a balance bridge, wheel train and a diamond cut effect on the barrel.
The dial of the new white gold Junghans 1972 Competition Limited Edition watch is infused with classic sports styling. Its vivid-orange-filled chronograph counters are positioned in a bi-compax layout on an east-west axis, differing from the brand’s alternative stainless steel offering (which features a counter at 12 o’clock and a counter at 6 o’clock). In this white gold design, the orange-filled counters are dressed against an intense anthracite dial colour in a sunray brushed effect, offering a 12-hour function at 3 o’clock and a 30-minute totaliser at 9 o’clock. These features are surrounded by a chunky orange tachymeter scale, as well as a white minutes and seconds scale. Accompanying these elements is an hour and second central hand, treated with environmentally friendly lume. These match the finish on the indexes around the hour track and also accompany a central chronograph seconds hand, tipped in orange. At the base of the dial in anthracite is a small seconds counter, balanced by the Junghans lettering at 12 o’clock. Lastly, a date window is nestled between 4 and 5 o’clock.
The new Junghans 1972 Competition White Gold Limited Edition watch is offered on a black perforated leather band that injects further sporty appeal into the model’s overall design. The inner lining of the band is finished in vibrant orange to keep in line with the elements across the dial. Securing with a traditional stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the Junghans logo, this band works in conjunction with a slightly curved caseback to ensure it sits tight during movement.
