In-depth Review of the Angelus Chronodate Titanium White

The new Chronodate Titanium White Limited Edition watch by Angelus celebrates a chronograph that enjoyed 80 years of success as a sports watch with a triple calendar feature. Today, the new Titanium White version of the Angelus Chronodate watch is limited to 25 pieces worldwide and boasts a stunning opaline dial. 

About the Chronodate watch by Angelus

Instead of creating incredibly stylish watches assembled from components sourced from multiple suppliers, Angelus has made a name for itself for creating exceptionally beautiful in-house developed wristwatches and soon became one of the industry’s elite watchmakers experienced in building independent chronographs. During the 1950s in particular, the Chronodate was a watch developed by Angelus that really stood out from the crowd. It was the world’s first chronograph wristwatch to accommodate a triple calendar feature. Instead of scrunching the date feature towards the middle of the dial as many chronograph manufacturers did, the day and date features of the Angelus Chronodate watch were given plenty of space on the display. Indeed, the date was displayed around the outer edge of the dial and identified by a red-tipped hand.

Behind the Angelus Chronodate was plenty of thought and consideration. Its design was both visually appealing and legible. Now, to mark 80 years since its first release, Angelus has launched the new Chronodate Titanium and Red Gold limited editions. The Red Gold watch is available in a rich blue dial encased in 18ct rose gold, whilst the titanium watch is available in two versions; one with an opaline dial and another in blue. This time we’re going to look at the titanium version with an opaline dial.

The Angelus Chronodate Titanium White Limited Edition watch

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium Limited Edition watch with an opaline dial affords a clean and contemporary style for the wrist. Whilst many features have changed since the original chronograph watch was released 80 years ago, some have remained. Take, for example, the large and concise Arabic numeral markers that highlight the hour track – some of which are cut way to accommodate space for the chronograph dials. The 30-minute chronograph sub-scale at 3 o’clock and the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock have also been kept. Lastly, the hour and hands also keep their syringe-style shape. These hands have been treated with white Super-LumiNova that glows in a blue hue in dark conditions or during the night. Differing from the original Chronodate watch, which became recognised for its triple calendar function, the new Chronodate Titanium White Limited Edition watch foregoes the day and month window, placing more focus on the chronograph features alone.

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium White watch features an opaline dial with a frosted centre and two symmetrically displayed black trimmed and raised chronograph sub-counters with smooth silvery centres at 3 and 9 o’clock. The 30-minute counter has a vibrant red hand whilst the hand located opposite used for reading the small seconds is finished in a silver hue to match the central hour and minute hands and the red tip of the central chronograph second hand. The pointer style date hand, which works in conjunction with a raised opaline date scale around the periphery of the dial, also features a vivid red arrow-shaped tip. Matching these shots of red is a red rubber band that features around the circumference of the crown at 3 o’clock, flanked by wing-like structures that act as crown protecting features.

The new Angelus Chronodate Titanium White Limited Edition watch features a 42.5mm case crafted from lightweight titanium in a brushed effect. The 30-meter water-resistant case also features cut-out sections around the side of the case as well as a bezel showcasing cut-outs that reveal black carbon composite sections that match the black composite carbon push-pieces at 2 and 4 o’clock – the top one to begin and stop a timing – the bottom to reset the chronograph timing. A boxed sapphire crystal glass front protects the surface of the textured opaline dial and smooth opaline sub-scales, shielding it from heat, moisture, scratching, light and denting. The same material is used for the back of the case, which reveals a beautiful in-house column-wheel chronograph movement.

The A-500 automatic chronograph movement boasts a striking rotor depicting the shape of the Angelus logo. It also operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. Through a sapphire-backed case, the movement’s sandblasted mainplate, microbeaded and NAC-treated bridges, circular and rhodium-plated wheels, and tungsten oscillating weight are all put on view. To complete its sporty look, the new Titanium White version of the new Angelus Chronodate watch is fitted on a black rubber strap with a matching titanium fastening.
