A Review of the Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy Perlon Strap Watches
Wednesday - 14 September 2022
I remember the release of the first Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy watches so clearly. Amidst all the chaos and uncertainty left behind after the pandemic, the colourful Cotton Candy watches offered a sense of hope. Their vibrant colour palette granted a touch of escapism and a vision of a brighter, more hopeful future. The slew of models in sky blue, lipstick pink, and wild grass was a complete breath of fresh air. That said, they were Diver’s Sixty-Five watches through and through, with all the much-loved DNA left intact and untouched, just the way we like it. With that said, the prospect of new additions to this very special line is a particularly exciting one. So, without further ado, for 2022, Oris has released a batch of new Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy models, and they’re enough to make you go weak at the knees.
Keeping in line with the reliability and accuracy we have all come to love and respect from the Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five watch collection, these new Cotton Candy watches for 2022 have all been powered by a mechanical Swiss movement and boast the alluring warm tones of a patinated bronze case. They are, without a doubt, one of my favourites from the famous red rotor brand. Vintage they do look, in their 38mm cases, integrated with 100-meter water resistance. This time, they’re fitted on striking Perlon straps that really add an elevated touch of detail.
A little on the Diver’s Sixty-Five watch…
If you’ve played around with a Diver’s Sixty-Five watch before, you’ll already be aware that these dive watches from Oris hark back to an important milestone in the brand’s heritage. One particularly iconic model released in 1965 has inspired this new range of dive watches, leveraged even further by its affordable price tag. The range already has a broad spectrum of dial colours, sizes, case materials and features to choose from, including a chronograph version and a handful of limited-edition models like the Carl Brashear and Movember models, for example. Although now equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel, the original releases from the 1960s featured bi-directional rotating bezels. Some of the displays also featured boxed Arabic numerals, whilst others afforded a track with dot and baton hour markers - both of which have been seen on more recent versions too.
Nevertheless, Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five watches are classified as state-of-the-art retro diving watches that combine values of legibility, endurance and robustness. Newer models are fitted with domed scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass fronts, treated with plenty of anti-reflective technology. These replace the plexiglass of yesteryear models and help to uphold the watch’s 100-meter water-resistant rating.
It’s all about the bronze
The new Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy watches are crafted from bronze and measure a compact 38mm diameter. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a resurgence in the popularity of the bronze dive watch. No material captures the retro feel of a vintage-inspired dive watch quite like this material since it develops a patina of its own over time. Growing in charm and character as time goes by, these bronze cases are also incredibly resistant to saltwater.
The new Cotton Candy watches from Oris come in the same lipstick pink, wild grass and sky blue colours of their former selves. Their bold designs are a testament to Oris’ bravery in exploring new boundaries whilst keeping the style of the Diver’s Sixty-Five watch intact and as tasteful as ever. Each confectionary-inspired reference boasts a new recycled Perlon strap in a bid to underscore the brand’s position when it comes to sustainability. Accentuating the cheerful character of the Cotton Candy watches by Oris, each strap is colour coordinated with its respective dial, adding an assertive pastel pop of colour to the wrist. Each new Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy watch is also fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel for measuring elapsed time underwater. The count-up scale is presented in relief upon the surface of the bronze bezel.
Whether you choose the lipstick pink, sky blue or wild grass green colour, all the new Oris Diver’s Sixty-Five Cotton Candy watches are powered by the Oris 733 Calibre. The automatic movement is based on the self-winding Sellita SW200-1 movement, which comprises 26 jewels, beats at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides an impressive power reserve of 38 hours. Although many may view the Cotton Candy watches by Oris to be intended for a female audience, these 38mm models are, in fact, unisex and will speak to those who are drawn to less conventional watch styles the most.
