A Look at the U-Boat Darkmoon 44 Watches for 2023
Monday - 24 April 2023
Vividly coloured hour markers and hands in yellow, orange, aquamarine, white and green pop against an intense black oil-filled dial in these new releases from U-Boat’s intriguing Darkmoon series – each one released at this year’s Watches & Wonders 2023 showcase.
Unlike any other watch on the market right now, U-Boat’s Darkmoon watch collection has expanded greatly over the last few years and combines a crisp and (sometimes) vividly coloured dial with an oil bath concept that intensifies the colour and richness of the display uniquely. The Capsoil Darkmoon watches share a similar DNA to the brand’s popular Classic range but appear more delicate thanks to a bezel-less design that seas the rim of the stainless steel case flow neatly into the highly domed sapphire crystal glass. Heightening the effect of this unorthodox design, U-Boat experts immerse the internal cavity of the watch with oil. The only clue to this freely moving liquid is an air bubble locked into the underside of the glass, which floats effortlessly across the surface of the dial to create a magnifying effect across elements of the dial as it travels. Hovering above hour markers or the date window at 3 o’clock, for example, it creates a cyclops lens effect but also serves to balance the pressure within the watch, whilst enhancing a sense of depth and a richness to the display.
As with all U-Boat watches, one distinguishable feature of this watch is its left-sided crown that has been reduced in size. Instead, the crown is given a flat surface, creating a refined finish to the dimensions of the case. If you were in search of a two-handed time and date watch, the Darkmoon series certainly adds a quirky and dynamic edge to timekeeping. Especially since the brand has now released a slew of new models including the Vintage BR Curve watches and the Curve Camouflage watches. The former features a stainless steel case that has been treated with layers of bronze paint to create the impression of a vintage-inspired bronze watch. This version also comes in a fully black PVD-coated stainless steel option. Both of these iterations come in a 40mm or 44mm case size and whilst the black case versions features a matching stealthy black dial, the bronze-coloured case options include either a black dial with brown elements or a brown dial with black elements. The latter is the Curve Camouflage watch, which as its name suggests, features a PVD-coated camouflage patterned effect across its stainless steel case. You can enjoy this watch with a black dial or a grey dial and a choice in size of 40mm or 44mm.
Alongside these iterations, however, are five new models with vivid shots of colour running through their rubber bands and their dial features. The green, white, aquamarine, yellow and orange models all feature rich black dials with coloured hour markers and hands that are enhanced by their oil-filled environment sitting underneath a domed sapphire glass.
If you like your watches with a pop of colour, the new U-Boat Darkmoon watches achieve this without being too overbearing. Each model has a black dial, punctuated with red lettering seen at the southern hemisphere of the dial featuring the ”Darkmoon” lettering. In addition to this, each model has a date indicator at 3 o’clock, straight hands, and an hour track represented by a mix of sticks, dots and Arabic numerals. The hands and hour markers of each dial are executed in a vibrant colour that matches their respective green, white, aquamarine, yellow and orange rubber straps. These rubber bands have been embossed with bold U-boat lettering and secure comfortably to the underside of the wrist with a stainless steel buckle. The surface of each stainless steel case has also been executed in a sleek black PVD-coated finish, with matching lugs to complement their deep black dials.
Whether you are new to the Darkmoon series of U-Boat watches or not, these new models are incredibly youthful and eye-catching. Each watch is fitted and powered by a quartz movement that is made all the more easier to change thanks to a unique locking ring system. The back of the case is inscribed with details that denote the oil bath design of each model, along with a 50-meter water-resistant reference. The amplified style of each Darkmoon dial certainly lends to the enjoyment of telling the time through a unique display, whilst a confident 44mm case diameter is sure to catch the attention of anyone with an eye for detail.
