A Look at the New TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph 2021 Watches
Tuesday - 18 May 2021
This year, the 2021 Bahrain Grand Prix Formula One championship was marked with the release of three new sporty chronograph watches from TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 watch collection. These sturdy 43mm watches offer 200-meter water-resistant capabilities, yellow and orange accented dials and a mix of black nylon or stainless steel straps.
TAG Heuer dedicated its functional, durable and legible racing-inspired watches to Formula 1 back in 1986, when it first launched the collection. It is now home to GMT watches, chronographs, simple three-handed models with date functions and a mix of automatic and quartz-powered tools. Following the takeover of Techniques d’Avant Garde's (TAG) in 1986, TAG Heuer’s Formula 1 watches were the first timepieces to hit the market. Originally powered by quartz movements from ETA or Ronda, the collection first debuted with watches that featured steel core sections covered in colourful fibreglass and a gear-like bezel. Having evolved considerably since then, Formula 1 watches by TAG Heuer today are forged from solid stainless steel and feature anti-glare sapphire crystal glass tops, along with a myriad of different dial colours to choose from. The reputation of the unfaltering TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch, however, is owed to professional drivers like Jo Siffert, who sported the Swiss brand’s name on his car and racing suit back in the day, catching the eye of many a F1 driver, who aspired to experience the TAG Heuer Formula 1 watch for themselves.
This year, the three new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph watches have been released alongside a striking tangerine orange asphalt three-handed model with a date. The chronograph versions, however, feature three grey dials – two bearing zesty yellow accents and one boasting tangerine orange elements similar to said three-handed version. All three models were released as an homage to the 2021 Bahrain Grand Prix Formula One race which took place in March, sporting the unmistakable chronograph dial that has been used heavily throughout the iconic collection.
The three new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph watches are audacious and vivid. Designed to capture the adrenaline experienced both in the driver’s seat and at the side of the race track, the watches pack a punch on the wrist with their rugged 43mm stainless steel cases. If you are still yet to take a close-up look at the three new models, now is your chance. In this article, we’re covering all the key features of the new yellow and orange chronograph watches, complete with some close-up shots.
The case:
There are some unmissable characteristics to note about the three new chronograph additions of the TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection. These include the zesty yellow and tangerine orange details seen in the tachymeter scale on the watch’s black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel. Perfect for measuring speed based on distance or distance based on tine travelled - the tachymeter continues to prove its use as an indescribable tool for measuring racetrack circuits at championships like the Bahrain Grand Prix event. The stainless steel case measures a confident 43mm diameter and is executed in fine-brushed and polished effects, topped with a flat sapphire crystal glass front. Differing from the TAG Heuer Formula 1 Orange three-handed model, also released for 2021, these watches sport push-pieces coated in black for effortless handling of the chronograph features. They also feature a black-coated screw-down crown with a crown protection system for resisting damage upon impact. Flip the case over and the brushed steel caseback is engraved with the recognisable chequered effect, paired with the instantly recognisable TAG Heuer lettering and its shield emblem.
The dial:
The dials of the three new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph watches differ slightly depending on their colourways. All three models feature a grey textured dial adorned with baton markers and an Arabic numeral at 12H on the hour track. These, along with the central hands, sub-counter hands, and the tachymeter lettering on the bezel are finished in either yellow or orange shades. The sub-dials located at 2, 6 and 10 o’clock provide small seconds, 1/10th of a second and 30-minute function respectively. Some finer coloured accents can also been seen in the black flange around the outside of each dial, detailing the seconds and minutes. Both the hands and hour markers have also been treated with Super-LumiNova material to assist with timekeeping in dimly-lit conditions.
The movement and straps
The movement powering the hands of each of these three new TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph watches is that of a Swiss-sourced quartz type. This movement is protected from water damage up to 200-meters and is protected from shock, impact heat, light and vibration whilst secured inside the case. Both the TAG Heuer ref: CAZ101AG.BA0842 and CAZ101AH.BA0842 models (yellow and orange respectively) are fitted with a stainless steel bracelet, with links finished in both fine-brushed and polished techniques. The metal band secures to the wrist with a TAG Heuer shield logo-engraved folding clasp. The yellow accented TAG Heuer ref: CAZ101AG.FC8304 comes finished on a black nylon strap with both yellow and grey contrast stitching and a traditional stainless steel pin buckle.
