Enhancing its see-through aesthetics – the new Chronoswiss SkelTec watch is clothed in black and reduced in form to fit inside an organically shaped case. Accompanying its release in time for Watches & Wonders 2020 is its sibling – the stunning Azure blue iteration. Both models are equipped with the same hand-wound movement and boast a matt black “X” chrome coated centrepiece. As with anything, stripping away any unnecessary decoration and surrounding materials enables whatever remains to take the lead role. This is true for the new Chronoswiss SkelTec Pitch Black - a watch that brings timekeeping into the night with luminous features reduced to the essentials and all the finest parts of its engine put on centre stage.
Exploring the dark matter…
There are 51 parts to the construction of the new 45mm Chronoswiss SkelTec watch’s case. These include black coated organic shapes achieved via a diamond-like carbon coating (DLC). The shape of the case and its ergonomic design is inspired by science fiction vessels and thus has been developed by the company’s five-axis CNC machines. To explain in a little more detail, Panziera extends:
“Obviously the SkelTec is a contemporary interpretation of skeletonising, even though all the excess is taken away already on the drawing table. We wanted to also have this approach on the lugs – and it is a great challenge to design and manufacture these high-tech organic shapes even with the best of machines.”
A softly-curved crown guard joins the unique profile of the new Chronoswiss SkelTec Pitch Black watch, as well as hollowed lugs that sensually flow into an indestructible patented Autobloc system that ensures a remarkably secure fixture around the band. This feature makes it near-on impossible for the screws to ever work themselves loose. The surface of the 51-piece case construction is also sandblasted to create a matte finish and features both a sapphire crystal glass top and bottom. Second, only to the hardness of a diamond, this sapphire crystal glass material is also integrated with anti-reflective treatment that has been applied twice over, granting a clear view into the dial of the new SkelTec Pitch Black watch and its beating heart. The screw-down caseback is executed with a satin finish and the 50-meter water-resistant case also features an onion crown -a feature that is seen in many Chronoswiss watch collections. The Cal.304 movement is a minimalist hand-wound movement that has served the SkelTec watch collection well since it came onto the scene in 2020. It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and was designed exclusively for the SkelTec series, promising a useful 48-hour power reserve. The open screw balance at 6 o’clock is a unique feature of the new SkelTec Pitch Black watch since it mimics a black hole. The triangular bridges that anchor the essential organs of the engine into place can be seen at 11 and 1 o’clock. These stabilise the minute ring adorned with white numerals and the mainspring. Carrying the white-lacquered hands, filled with black Super-LumiNova, the soot-black-coloured “X” contrasts beautifully against a mix of circular grain and sunray brushed rhodium-coated elements.
A black leather-lined calfskin and textile strap completes the contemporary look of the new Limited Edition Chronoswiss SkelTec Pitch Black watch.
